Aug '09 IDMA DEBUTS Blu-ray Replication Deals!

dvdaward_pic_75.jpgThe IDMA has been working to provide opportunities for independent Blu-ray producers and authors to better navigate the Blu-ray ecosystem

Recent reductions in AACS license fees were the first evidence that people have been listening to us. For Mac authors, the creation and release of BluStreak Premaster provides a path to replication-ready BD CMF volumes for applications like Roxio Toast and Adobe Encore that only create BDMV output volumes.

Now, IDMA is pleased to announce the next phase of our Digital Media Publishing Initiative - BLU-RAY REPLICATION specifically tailored to indie Blu-ray producers! IDMA has negotiated a COMPLETE BLU-RAY REPLICATION PACKAGE that provide Mastering, Check Discs, Disc Face printing, Plastic Disc Cases, full-color printing for the case Wrapper, assembly of discs into cases, shrinkwrap, and cartoning. In short, EVERYTHING you need for retail-ready short run quantities (1000 and up), at a VERY aggressive price, but JUST FOR IDMA MEMBERS! (Hint - You will NOT be able to match our incredible prices "on the street".)

The ONLY costs not included in the package are the AACS title key certificate ($640 = $500 title key cert + $100 order fee + $0.04 per disc royalty) and shipping from the replicator to your desired destination (varies with chosen courier, and destination). Members, LOG IN on the site and check the replication options available to you (coming shortly).

If you not yet an IDMA member, and are interested in a price quote, please visit www.EasyBluDisc.com and use the Quote Request form... We will get right back to you with information on the package details.

Help us continue to bring these developents to you:

We'd appreciate your continuing support for our efforts, which are constantly looking after the interests of non-Hollywood Blu-ray producers and authors. Join the IDMADVDA now, and help us do more!

Oct '09 New Sponsor, more member benefits

IDMA/DVDA president Bruce Nazarian
It's October, ( and almost time for "Boo-ray Halloween") - and that means it's been two years since the DVDA began its conversion into the IDMA. Going into the fall we will be adding more information about digital media that isn't necessarily on an optical disc, and some more info about disc-based media as well. And soon, we will be unveiling our first "IDMA digital media" blogger!!

IDMA was at DV Expo last month (and it was nice to meet all who dropped by), and will be exhibiting at Government Video Expo (GV Expo) on December 2,3, in Washington D.C. We will once again be demonstrating how to harness the power of Blu-ray video and publish BD discs without having to get bogged down in expensive licensing and replication; we will also have some special guests at the IDMA booth (#346) so stay tuned to our website as time passes along. We will also have some handsome tchatkes (pens, etc) and special gifts for those who choose to join on the spot!

A "Boo-Ray" Halloween - was going to be the theme of the October 29th New York City IDMA gathering, but the date has had to be postponed into early November. But stay tuned, as it will be the beginning of the New York Chapter's re-emergence into an active community. Keep an eye ont about Los Angeles, too, as L.A. will be planning something in November as well.

OUR 20th ANIVERSARY!  It's hard to believe we're nearly 20 years old, but that's the fact! I feel honored to have been elected to shepherd the transformation of the DVDA into the IDMA, and honored to follow in the footsteps of previous DVDA executives Paul Holmes, Michelle Serra, Victor Mc Crary, and Bernie Mitchell. Check out the IDMA/DVDA Hall of Fame to see more about our historical contributors.

IDMA Membership Benefit - AFLAC Insurance!  We have just posted details on a new IDMA INSURANCE PROGRAM from Aflac - IDMA will initially offer our members Accident Indemnity and Hospital Protection, but there's more we can add if there's interest. Remember Aflac pays CASH claims benefits, and I sincerely doubt you would have to fight with them to get fulfillment on a policy claim!  Login and Check the Membership Benefits page, and download the informative AFLAC PDF. You will enjoy the fact that you can deal directly with our resident agent, Stephen Schram, and if you wish to enroll, can pay directly to AFLAC. We make NO MARKUP on this - we offer it as a membership benefit to ALL IDMA membership levels.

A note of caution about BD replication
This note is NOT for those of you who have already successfully authored BD-ROM titles for replication - it's for everyone ELSE who visits this website, who may not yet have dug deeply into the BD format's stringent requirements.

While the AACS changes currently underway may make it financially more affordable for new authors to produce for Blu-ray replication a word of caution is in order: Just because you own a Blu-ray authoring tool doesn't mean you can make a replicatable Blu-ray Disc.  Read on for more...

Breaking news: The IDMA/DVDA Excellence Awards entry period has been extended for two weeks (until midnight, PDT, May 15th, 2009) to allow for last-minute entries.

Our Excellence 2009 event will take place on the afternoon of June 24th, immediately following the ESCA event at the LUXE hotel in Los Angeles. We will have event signup, and directions posted shortly.

Our Post- NAB score sheet: We had some great Blu-ray sessions at NAB PPWC 2009, debuted interesting new Blu-ray tools like BluStreak Premaster , but we're still concerned about the lukewarm Blu-ray adoption by non-Hollywood producers. Add your voice to our Blu-ray stimulus petition , which strongly urges the AACS-LA to reduce AACS license fees to promote Blu-ray publishing.

It's April once again, and that means thoughts turn to NAB, and the goodies that will be on display there.

While budgets may be shrinking, that doesn't reduce "gadget lust" expecially in the media arts! so expect there will be the usual 100,000+ trampling the halls of NAB, all searching for the "next big thing".

One thirst that never seems to diminish is that for information - so this year, again, IDMA/DVDA is pleased to co-present "Focus on Technology: Blu-ray", where we will be presenting five 75-minute sessions covering the Blu-ray Disc, from basic th BD-J and BD-Live. Click here for the agenda.

Mar '09 - new name, new mission, new awards
IDMA/DVDA president Bruce Nazarian

by Bruce Nazarian, IDMA/DVDA President

I'm really excited to acknowledge some important milestones this month. We have a new name (IDMA), a new mission statement (which officially includes Blu-ray as well as online/interactive media, and some exciting new awards in our 2009 Excellence Awards (the longest-running peer-judged media awards around).

Our new name, International Digital Media Alliance (IDMA) reflects our newly expanded mission to promote excellence and foster best practices in digital and interactive media. We will be starting new initiatives to achieve these ends throughout 2009.

This year, our Excellence Awards unveil a new third division. Joining the Content Owner and Developer optical disc divisions is the new Online/Interactive division. In keeping with our expanded mission and market, our awards will recognize and reward excellence in streaming and downloadable media, online user experiences, and audio and video podcasts. It's a tribute to just how pervasive digital and online media have become in society, and how online distribution has exploded in the past few years.

If you are an online video host, a podcaster, or are otherwise involved with a digital media site or podcast, we cordially invite you to peruse our new categories and submit an entry for judging. You just might join the array of past Excellence Award winners!

We also invite you to join the IDMA at NAB's Post Production workshop this April 19th, as we join with FMC in presenting an entire day chock full of the latest information on the newest optical disc format: Blu-ray. You can find details online here: NAB PPWC Focus on Technology: Blu-ray

Hope to see one of YOUR discs or online projects as an award entry - Bruce Nazarian, "the Digital Guy"

Feb '09 - What is the IDMA?

Comment by Bruce Nazarian, IDMA/DVDA President

The DVDA has become the IDMA - it's an acronym we had before,
but now with a whole new meaning - we're expanding, and moving forward!

In order to better serve the industry, the DVDA board voted recently to revert to our old acronym IDMA to better reflect our expanded mission of promoting all forms of visual and audible publishing - DVD, Blu-ray, and online/download. This thim, though, IDMA acronym stands for International Digital Media Alliance  (previously it was Interactive Digital Media Association).

We sincerely invite all DVD, Blu-ray Disc and online/downloadable/interactive content producers to join us and help us promote all of these publishing methods.  Our new IDMA URL is www.IDMADVDA.org

Comment by Bruce Nazarian, IDMA/DVDA President

Back in October, 2008, eMedia online posted an article by freelance writer Mark Fritz entitled “Is AACS killing the Blue-ray Disc industry”, in which officers of the DVD Association were quoted offering certain opinions about AACS and how it might be impacting the growth of the BD format. I'd like to take a moment to prevent any misunderstandings before they occur:  we are not pessimistic about AACS or Blu-ray Disc.  Rather, we’re expressing the hope that the format can open itself up for faster adoption and faster growth. There's more to this issue, though, so read on...

Feb 18th - Some Changes Are Afoot

pic_bcn_magnolia.jpg
Bruce Nazarian

A SINGLE FORMAT!

Unless you have been under a rock since January, you know that an avalanche of change has been sweeping through the Next Generation Optical disc community. Warner Brothers kicked things off in early January, when they announced they would support the Blu-ray Disc format exclusively over HD DVD on releases beginning around June 2008. Followed by recent similar announcements of exclusive support for Blu-ray Disc from Target, Netflix, Best Buy, and finally Walmart, it would appear that a major market shift is finally taking place. One the one hand, this is a great development, since it will finally resolve a format war that (in the opinion of many) has caused a lot of confusion in the minds of potential adoptees. Some have opined that the confusion over Next Gen had contirbuted to a perceived slowdown in DVD sales, as well, and that was a justification for Warner's opinion.

Regardless, it would appear to be over. This morning, the BBC is reporting that Toshiba has aoounced it will cease production of HD DVD players and recorders, effectively ending the format. They have said they will continue to offer support to existing customers, and that's a good thing. How this will play out in the future is something the DVDA will remain on top of.  Despite the end of the format, we should thank Toshiba (and its partners) for their technological development efforts on HD DVD.

More notes from Las Vegas and CES 2008...

Everyone was buzzing Monday about the Warner Bros decision to go exclusively with the Blu-ray Disc format, and that begs a thorough investigation and discussion here at a later time - but what I want to chat about today are some cool things that were being demonstrated at CES, and that FINALLY show us the potential of the long-awaited and oft-sought-for realtime internet connectivity from an Optical Disc player!

Jan 7th - Notes from CES 2008

CES_logo75.jpgGreetings from Las Vegas and CES 2008!

If you've ever wondered if it's possible for a trade show to get TOO big, this is the one that will make you feel that way! Reportedly in excess of 180,000 are in Sin City for this show, and it shows… Traffic jams are everywhere, and I mean foot traffic jams, as well as the motorized kind! The show is SO big, they even provide a shuttle bus just to get around the Las Vegas Convention Center (as well as to get you to the Hilton, Sands, and Venetian, each of which plays host to an important part of the show).

NewYr.jpgFirst and foremost, we would like to wish you all the happiest of new years, and our best wishes for a successful and prosperous 2008.

And in keeping with this month's title, a New Year, a New DVDA, you will be seeing many new and innovative things from the DVDA in 2008. First, DVDA will be more active in co-sponsoring and presenting events this year - our first co-sponsored event of 2008 is the Storage Visions '08, http://www.storagevisions.com taking place in Las Vegas on January 5-6, just before the perennial 'Big Show' - CES, where you will find many DVDA Directors in attendance.. 2008 also showcases our very first event from the DVD Association - Europe - a day of informative DVD and Next-Gen sessions to be held on January 31st at the Broadcast Live / Video Forum event at Earl's Court, in London: http://www.broadcastvideoforum.co.uk/. Information for this event will be posted shortly.

The President's Message - 1 December 07

As you may know, I was recently elected President of the DVDA by the DVDA Board of Directors, with a mandate for change, and change has been topmost on my list of priorities.

Since the election, I have been actively working to reshape the mission for the worldwide DVDA, making it relevant to 21st century issues, and more tangibly beneficial to its members. We've started by adding more globally-usable membership benefits for all our members, as well as organizing a series of high-profile conference events and DVD awards programs in the US, EU, and (shortly) Asia. For the first time, the DVDA Day of Excellence Event and Excellence Awards will be at NAB, in April 2008. Details will be forthcoming shortly.

Among the many member benefits we have recently added is an alliance with Netblender to provide DVDA Corporate Members with special access to the Do Studio MX online toolset, as well as discounts on DoStudio training classes to be held worldwide. We are also finalizing a deal for online digital media training thru lynda.com. Another benefit is a discount on HD After Edit (and DVD After Edit), a tool used by many DVD authors worldwide. In addition, our old friend Discmakers is offering all DVDA members a discount on their replication orders, and Screamervision in New York offers a discount on duplication. There are many more benefits that also exist. (Login and visit the members benefits page to see details)
